Untangled Beauty: How to Keep Knots Out of Your Hair and Shine In

Tangled hair isn’t just a minor inconvenience—it’s a full-blown mood killer. Whether you’re dealing with a few pesky knots or a full-on bird’s nest, tangles can lead to breakage, split ends, and more time than you’d like to spend brushing and smoothing out the knots! At Salon Le Volume, SLV, we believe beautiful hair should be manageable and stress-free. We’re here to give you the lowdown on keeping your strands silky, smooth, and tangle-free. Check out the steps below to learn how to prevent those unwanted tangles!

1. Start With Smart Washing

Your detangling routine actually begins right at the bathroom sink or shower. Avoid piling your hair on top of your head while shampooing as this can cause unnecessary friction and knots to form. Instead, we recommend gently working the shampoo (like Davines MOMO Shampoo) into your scalp and let the suds cleanse the ends as you rinse.

SLV Stylist Tip: Use a wide-tooth comb in the shower after applying your conditioner. The comb will distribute the product evenly and break up tangles before they form.

2. Start Conditioning Like a Pro

Dry and dehydrated hair is a magnet for tangles to form. Our SLV stylists recommend using a hydrating conditioner (like Davines MOMO Conditioner) that suits your hair type, and we also recommend to not be shy when applying leave-in treatments (like Davines OI Hair Butter). We recommend looking for products with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, or argan oil for long-lasting slip and shine.

SLV Stylist Tip: We offer deep conditioning treatments with K-18 that strengthen your strands and minimize future knots.

3. Ditch the Rough Towel Dry

Rubbing your hair with a regular towel can rough up the cuticle and cause friction.

SLV Stylist Tip: Use a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt and gently squeeze out the moisture. This method reduces frizz, too!

4. Brush Smarter, Not Harder

Not all hair brushes are created equal. Use a detangling brush (like the Wet Brush) or wide-tooth comb, and always start from the ends, working your way up. This method will avoid unnecessary breakage. Brushing from root to tip drags knots downward and makes them worse.

SLV Stylist Tip: Keep a mini detangling brush ( Mini Wet Brush) in your purse or gym bag—your future self will thank you.

5. Protect Your Hair While You Sleep

Tossing and turning at night creates friction, especially if you’re sleeping on cotton pillowcases. Our SLV stylists recommend switching to a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap your hair in a silk scarf before bed.

SLV Stylist Tip: Loose braids or twists can help contain longer hair and prevent tangles overnight.

6. Style With Tangle Prevention in Mind

Certain hairstyles, like high ponytails or top buns, can actually encourage knots—especially if your hair is fine or curly. Our SLV stylists recommend using styles like loose braids, buns, or twist-outs that allow your hair to rest without tangling.

SLV Stylist Tip: Always, always use a heat protectant (like Davines OI All In One Hair Milk) when styling with hot tools. Damaged hair equals tangled hair!

7. Add a Brazilian Blowout

If tangle prevention is at the top of your mind, a Brazilian blowout may be a fit for you. A Brazilian blowout is a hair treatment process that one of our SLV stylists performs which will straighten and smooth your hair!

The Brazilian blowout process uses a keratin solution that will protect your hair strands. Since the Brazilian blowout process smooths out the hair strands, this will reduce the friction between the hair strands and the potential for tangles.
